PROTECT YOURSELF: USING THE RIGHT PPE FOR THE TASK

Protect Yourself: Using the Right PPE for the Task
Many injuries occur not because PPE is unavailable, but because it is not used correctly, not used consistently, or the wrong type is selected for the task. For example, handling trash without proper gloves can expose you to sharp objects, while working with chemicals without the right protection can lead to skin irritation or eye injury.
PPE is designed to create a barrier between you and these hazards. It is not just part of the job — it is part of how the job is done safely.
Taking a few extra seconds to select and use the correct PPE helps prevent injuries that can be easily avoided.
WHY PPE MATTERS
Without proper PPE, you may be exposed to:
- Sharp objects hidden in trash → cuts, punctures, possible infection
- Chemical splashes or mist → eye irritation, skin burns, respiratory discomfort
- Debris or dust → eye injury or irritation
- Wet or slippery surfaces → increased risk of slips and falls
These hazards are not always visible, which is why
protection must be used every time.
USING THE RIGHT PPE FOR THE TASK
Gloves
Not all gloves provide the same protection:
- Trash handling → cut-resistant gloves protect from sharp objects
- Chemical use → chemical-resistant gloves protect from exposure
Using the wrong gloves can leave you unprotected.
Eye Protection
Use safety glasses when:
- Working with chemicals
- There is a risk of splashing or airborne particles
Even small splashes can cause significant irritation or injury.
Foot Protection
- Non-slip shoes help reduce fall risks
- Wet floors and smooth surfaces increase the chance of slipping
CHECK BEFORE YOU START
- Is the correct PPE available?
- Is it in good condition?
- Does it match the task?
If PPE is missing or damaged — report it before continuing.
